Getting Started in Correspondence Chess

How long do I have for my moves?
20 playing days for each 10 moves, Sundays and bank holidays do not count for these purposes.

How should I keep track of my games?
As well as your game scorecard, keep a permanent track of your game. If you are playing by email or on an internet server then an electronic copy may be more appropriate for your needs. There are many free products available to help you do this.

What notation should I use?
Any notation that is acceptable to your opponent and understood by you is acceptable. If you are just getting started in chess then you may find algebraic notation easier to use, as modern day chessbooks are written using this notation.

How should I send moves?
If you are playing in a knockout or continuous tournament you will find a scorecard in with your pairings sheet, make sure you fill in the date column and that your address is correct. Fill in your move, using your agreed notation, and send your move. If you receive a move, check it through and note the date you received it immediately, if you have a query, then contact your opponent as soon as possible.
